GlobalFoundries to open research and testing centers in Kolkata
US-based chipmaking giant GlobalFoundries will start operations in Kolkata with Research & Development (R&D) and testing facilities by late September 2025.
This was announced by West Bengal's IT & Electronics Minister, Babul Supriyo. The facility will be located in the Software Technology Park of India in Salt Lake and will cover about 13,000 square feet.
This move comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meeting with US President Joe Biden in 2024, where the GlobalFoundries Kolkata Centre was first announced. The Minister stated, "After getting the space, R&D is the first step, and there are several other stages planned." The next stage will involve setting up a "Fabrication Laboratory" which will create many more jobs.
The "Bengal Silicon Valley Tech Hub" is attracting significant investments. Companies like Reliance Jio, Adani, LT-Mindtree, and TCS have bought land, with total commitments exceeding Rs 30,000 crore. Several data centers are also expected to start operations soon.
