IndiGrid outlines Rs. 41 billion capex across transmission & BESS projects

IndiGrid Infrastructure Trust (a listed infrastructure investment trust) has announced plans for capital expenditure of Rs. 41 billion (Rs. 4,100 crore) across its portfolio of power-transmission and utility-scale battery-energy-storage-system (BESS) projects.

The strategic investment reflects rising importance of grid modernisation, renewable-integration and storage-backed network stability in India’s energy transition.

With higher renewable-energy penetration, grid disruption risk and off-peak demand variation increase; transmission nodes and BESS can capture emerging opportunities. IndiGrid’s capex commitment positions it to benefit from these tailwinds and strengthens its long-term cash-flow visibility via contracted assets.

Critical execution factors include obtaining regulatory approvals from power utilities, securing land/ROW for transmission lines, technology risk for large-scale BESS systems, and financing at favourable cost. While the announced capex is positive, actual project commissioning, asset-yield and tariff-regulation will determine investor returns.
