Power Generation Jan 12,2026

NTPC has announced plans to invest around Rs.10,000 crore to establish a coal-to-synthetic natural gas (SNG) project in Chhattisgarh, marking a strategic shift towards cleaner utilisation of domestic coal reserves.

The project will convert coal into gaseous fuel suitable for use in power generation, fertiliser production, and city gas distribution networks.

It aligns with the Centre’s coal gasification mission, which aims to reduce dependence on imported LNG and enhance energy security.

NTPC is currently assessing technology providers, water availability, and coal linkage logistics to ensure project viability.

The initiative is expected to support industrial decarbonisation while creating long-term employment and ancillary business opportunities in the region
