Tamil Nadu plans new substation in Ambattur to support data centres
Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation Ltd (TANTRANSCO) has proposed a 400/230-110 kV gas-insulated substation in Ambattur, Chennai, to meet the rising power demand from the region’s growing data-centre industry.
The substation will feature 2×500 MVA (400/230 kV) and 2×200 MVA (400/110 kV) transformers, with underground cable connections to the nearby Korattur GIS station.
With multiple global companies setting up large-scale data-centre operations in Ambattur, demand for reliable, high-capacity power infrastructure has surged.
The new substation will enhance supply reliability and support the city’s ambition to become a leading digital-infrastructure hub in India.
The project will be developed under a tariff-based competitive bidding model, encouraging private-sector participation in Tamil Nadu’s power-grid expansion.
