Waste-management upgrade planned to reduce Delhi’s landfill burden

Power Generation Dec 01,2025

Delhi has initiated a major waste-management upgrade aimed at reducing pressure on existing landfills and improving segregation and processing. The initiative includes mechanised equipment, upgraded transfer stations, and expanded waste-processing capacity to shift more waste toward recycling and waste-to-energy paths. This approach is aimed at addressing the long-standing issue of overflowing landfills in India’s capital.

Urban bodies are placing greater emphasis on source segregation, improved collection efficiency, and modernised waste-treatment infrastructure. These upgrades also integrate environmental controls such as leachate treatment and methane capture systems, reducing pollution risks. Cleaner waste handling is expected to improve public-health metrics and air quality.

The project supports national waste-management policies that aim to reduce landfill dependency and enhance circular-economy practices. Contractors and solution providers in recycling, processing machinery, and smart-waste systems are expected to see new business opportunities. Over time, the improvements will contribute to a more sustainable urban ecosystem for Delhi.
